Sleeping Related Breathing Disorders

Sleep-related breathing disorders are conditions that affect breathing during sleep, leading to disrupted sleep and reduced oxygen levels in the body. The most common disorder is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where the airway becomes blocked or partially obstructed during sleep, causing pauses in breathing and frequent awakenings. Other types include central sleep apnea, where the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe, and complex sleep apnea, a combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

Symptoms of these disorders include loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, and morning headaches. Diagnosis typically involves a sleep study (polysomnography), and treatment may include the use of a CPAP machine, oral appliances, lifestyle changes, or, in severe cases, surgery.
